$780,000 awarded to 392 area students by the
Robert T. Kenney Scholarship Program at the American Savings Foundation
On Thursday, August 11, 2016 the Foundation announced and celebrated the 392 recipients of the Robert T. Kenney Scholarship for the 2016-2017 academic year. This included both first time recipients and those receiving renewals of the scholarship.
The reception featured two past scholarship recipients as guest speakers. Desiree Cameron-Ayeni, who received the scholarship in 2003, is now the Director of Financial Aid at the Yale School of Medicine. Justin Martella, who received the scholarship in 2001, is a former financial crimes detective, who now works in wealth management. Both are past recipients of a scholarship from the American Savings Foundation, and spoke about their experiences launching careers in the world of business and finance.
The evening also featured a video highlighting the Human Resources Agency of New Britain’s financial literacy program, a high-school youth program which receives funding from the American Savings Foundation. Students in the program study to become certified tax preparers and volunteer with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program in New Britain. Several have gone on to become Robert T. Kenney scholars.
In addition to the college students and family members in the audience, groups of younger students from several local youth development programs to attend, including the Boys and Girls Club of New Britain, Connecticut Junior Republic, CPEP, Granville Academy, HRA of New Britain, New Britain Police Activity League, OIC of New Britain, the Sisters in Science form the New Britain Youth Museum, Waterbury Youth Service System, and the Waterbury YMCA also attended.
